Yesterday was all red carpets and popped flash bulbs, as the Indie spotlight shone on those lantern-jawed titans that will be battling it out for the ultimate Cannes accolade of the Palme d'Or. In contrast, today's preview is more playful and sparky, a puckish gremlin tweaking the noses of said titans, as the focus shifts to the films screening as part of Critics' Week.

Thursday just gone was the big reveal of the line-up for this year's Cannes Film Festival, and I think most folks got what they wanted (although there teeny, tiny pangs of sadness in this writer's heart at the absence of Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method and Dominik Moll's The Monk). Today is the day Indie begins to drill into that weighty list, starting with a preview of all the Palme d'Or contenders.

Just the facts, ma'am, just the facts. A large chunk of the line-up for the 2011 Cannes Film Festival has just been announced. Malick, Almodóvar, von Trier and Nicolas Winding Refn are in. David Cronenberg is not. Read on for the full listings, for now gloriously unadorned (aside, oddly enough, for film durations), although we will be bringing you a more comprehensive preview as soon as possible.

Bertolucci knows what he's getting at Cannes 2011

Yes, on 11 May, during the opening ceremony of this year's Cannes Film Festival, an honourary Palme d'Or will be given to Bernardo Bertolucci. The Italian director will surely be hoping the prize is not handed over in some kind of homage to the most (in)famous scene of his Last Tango in Paris, with festival prez Gilles Jacob greasing the trophy up with butter before Bertolucci er, receives it.

Monday's first component of this Cannes 2011 preview focused on those films reckoned to be pretty much dead certs to play at the Palais des Festivals in May.
