Robin Hood red carpet footage and more

Yesterday was the premiere of Cannes’ opening film, Robin Hood. The Croisette was thronged with people trying to get a glimpse of actors including Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett as they walked the red carpet. Police held back the crowds to allow the invitees to make their way from their hotels to the cinema. Check out the footage, below.

Cannes: on the Croisette today

Greetings from Cannes! We’ve spent time this morning cruising the Croisette, and it’s plastered with huge film posters, some of which you can peep in the gallery below. You can also see the jetty decorated with Robin Hood artwork, which is presumably where Crowe, Blanchett et al will arrive (by speedboat?) for the premiere tonight.

Pre-festival nerves

That I am now typing this in Cannes is partially thanks to our taxi driver, a gregarious barrel-chested man who ferried us from Nice Airport to Cannes itself. That that relatively short journey was often a white-knuckle journey into visceral terror is an eternal black mark against both him and his mystifying choice of profession. Still, in Cannes I am and I've got the low-ranking press pass to prove it.

We have? Just checking). The hype balloons have been floated in earnest for many of the Cannes 2010 movies, and we have five trailers and one clip for you to view.

Zero hour

Anyone else remember back in the early '90s when one of the crazes in comic books was to put out an issue zero, in which a bit of background for the main characters would be languidly sketched in, without said characters getting up to anything interesting at all? Well, this opening blog post is kind of an equivalent to one of those issue zeros, merely offering a brief outline of intent before the serious (but super-fun) Cannes business begins in just under a fortnight's time. On the plus side though, I'm not charging anyone a quid fifty to read this.

Cannes is getting so close now that our wallets are already weeping in anticipation of those hiked-up croissant prices. More news in the last couple of days regarding movies showing at the Festival. Festival news - East End and Cannes

Festival news! The East London Film Festival kicks off tonight with a screening of the 1969 social drama Bronco Bullfrog, and Cannes has released its list of shorts that will compete for the Short Film Palme D’Or, as well as the films that have been chosen in its Cinéfondation category.

Cannes Directors’ Fortnight films announced

More news from Cannes: the Directors’ Fortnight (Quinzaine des Réalisateurs) line-up has been announced. It’s an eclectic, international mix. Sadly, it doesn’t redress the cer-azy gender imbalance of the entrants so far but there are a couple of female directors on the list and overall, there is much to anticipate.
