The Boys Are Back - and heading for an Oscar nom?

It’s that time of year when ‘For your consideration’ ads are running rampant online. Today we were gobsmacked to see that Robert Downey Jr is being hyped for his role in Sherlock Holmes (really? We love RDJ as much as the next movie news outlet but we’ve seen the trailer and that accent is pretty ropey…). A more plausible candidate for an Oscar nod is Clive Owen, for his role in sunny weepie The Boys Are Back.

Clive Owen in The Boys Are Back.

Directed by Scott Hicks, The Boys Are Back is based on a true story. Macho sports journo Joe Warr loses his partner and has to face up to the reality of bringing up his two young boys alone. Redemption seems to come in the form of some unusual parenting techniques.

The film is to be released in the UK on 22 January. We hope to have a review of this one soon, along with our thoughts on Owen’s possible Oscar-worthiness (current frontrunner must be Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart). Here's the trailer.
