There and back again, and there again: a Hobbit’s tale (and back again)

MarketSaw is stirring the rumour pot, bringing up old gossip on The Hobbit being filmed as a trilogy and also claiming that the movie will be in 3D. They add that the players’ characterisation is to take a darker form. This doesn’t seem to gel with comments that Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson have made in the past, so we wonder how reliable their reliable source is.

In its rather excitable article, MarketSaw states that the third film will be a bridge between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, with Peter Jackson moving back from producer to director. Déjà vu, anyone?

I’d like to bring your attention back to April, when del Toro spoke to Empire: “We’ve decided to have The Hobbit span the two movies, including the White Council and the comings and goings of Gandalf to Dol Guldur … we decided it would be a mistake to try to cram everything into one movie … the essential brief was to do The Hobbit, and it allows us to make The Hobbit in a little more style, if you like, of the [The Lord Of The Rings] trilogy.” No bridging the gap, no third movie mentioned. I rest my case.

Still no news from del Toro or Jackson on casting, although supposed short-listee, Daniel Radcliffe spoke to the Los Angeles Times recently. Obviously fearful of being typecast as ‘fantasy boy’, had this to say on playing Bilbo Baggins: “I’d have to say, ‘Thanks but no thanks,’ not that anyone has asked me. Honestly, I don’t think they would want me anyway, it’s just too close. Whatever I do next, I don’t think there will be any wizards in it!” So that’s one down, eight supposely potential Bilbos to go. (Robin Williams, Colin Firth, Martin Freeman, Ewan McGregor, Jack Black, Elijah Wood and Jamie Bell)
