Fantasy films: a round-up

Angela Burton
Daybreakers

Daybreakers gets freaky in two clips, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief shows off its actors, Clash of the Titans gets gritty in photos and The Hobbit looks for cast members (hairy feet a plus).

Due out in cinemas tomorrow, Daybreakers is making the most of last-minute promotional opportunities with the release of some new clips. First, you see what happens when a vampire has a human for a daughter – unconditional love, pah! Then an extended look at the birthday celebrations for Ethan Hawke’s Edward Dalton and a peek at what a little human blood on the wall attracts: uh oh.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief will be out in just over a month and what better way to get in the mood than to enjoy a clip, though most of it you will have seen in the trailers. There's a proper look at Pierce Brosnan as Chiron the centaur dressed like some kind of barbarian (I thought centaurs went bare-chested?). You can also see Sean Bean's gold-clad Zeus and a flicker of something between Logan Lerman’s Percy Jackson and Alexandra Daddario’s Annabeth Chase which I’m sure doesn’t happen until the final novels but hey, this is post-Twilight Hollywood. Supernatural teen romance sells.

From shiny kiddie Greek mythology to a grittier adult one: Clash of the Titans has some new images. Check out Sam Worthington’s Perseus as he embarks on a perilous journey to stop the underworld from spreading (in a skirt and a muscle top, hee hee).

With everyone hungry for Hobbit casting information, SpoilerTV managed to get their mitts on the casting call, which reveals more than just what is required from each character. Bilbo is the first on the list with an unsurprising character description and an age between 25-35 with a standard regional pronunciation; only four of the 13 dwarves are present on the list with accents ranging from standard regional pronunciation to slightly accented (the exception being Gloin who must have a Scottish one, clearly making a connection to Gimli in The Lord of the Rings). Also on the list is Bard the Bowman from Laketown; Radagast the Brown (a Istari wizard, proving the story will include the White Council and Gandalf’s travels to Dol Guldur); Italril a female woodand elf; the Mayor of Laketown; Primula a young pretty hobbit; Drogo, Bilbo’s cousin and father of Frodo; and a voice for the dragon Smaug. Check out the full in-depth list here.
