Outside the Law: Blu-ray prizes to be won

Outside the Law.

One of the few rays of quality amidst a predominantly ponderous official selection at Cannes last year, Rachid Bouchareb's political actioner Outside the Law finally arrives in UK cinemas on 6 May. To mark that release, Indie is giving away a poster for the movie, plus a set of three Blu-rays. Read on for details how to win.

A courter not only of critical praise, but also controversy (its Cannes debut coincided with a protest march by the French National Front), Outside the Law is the latest film from Rachid Bouchareb, the writer-director of Days of Glory and London River. Nominated earlier this year for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, the movie tells the story of Algeria's fight for indepedence from France, via the the experiences of three brothers (played by the trio of Sami Bouajila, Jamel Debbouze, and Roschdy Zem).

The incendiary trigger for all the action is the real-life Sétif massacre of 1945 (it was the on-screen depiction of this event which got the NF so hot under the collar), with the brothers subsequently reuniting in Paris, where they – to varying degrees – become involved with the armed resistance movement, the FLN. I saw the movie at Cannes and called it 'an ordered, slickly-produced action-drama', and believe me, that marks it as several times better than nearly everything else I saw in the main comp.

Outside the Law.

Okay, so that's the movie – now what goodies are up for grabs? Well, how about an Outside the Law poster, plus Blu-ray copies of Steven Soderbergh's Che parts one and two, and Olivier Assayas's epic Carlos? Yes, thought that would tickle your collective fancy.

To be in with a chance of winning, simply answer the following question...

Q. Outside the Law depicts which north African country's struggle to gain independence from France?

A) Morocco

B) Tunisia

C) Algeria

...and send your answer to competition@indiemoviesonline.com, with OUTSIDE THE LAW as the subject line and your name and address included. The competition closes on 3 June 2011, and is only open to UK residents aged 18 and over.
