There have been trailers aplenty recently and today is no exception. See what happens when Cillian Murphy and Thandie Newton take a trip to a deserted island in Retreat, Zoe Saldana turns assassin after a troubled childhood in Colombiana, and Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon go on a road trip, tasing fine food and testing competing impressions in Michael Winterbottom's The Trip.
First-time director Carl Tibbetts aims to send a shiver down your spine with the trailer for Retreat. Cillian Murphy and Thandie Newton play Martin and Kate, a couple who decide to take some time to recuperate after a family tragedy by taking a trip to the isolated island of Blackholme. But who should wash up upon the shore but an injured man going by the name of Jack (Jamie Bell). Once nursed back to health, he delivers news of a pandemic: an airborne killer disease has engulfed the rest of the world. But is he to be trusted?
The trailer sees a chilly boat ride thanks to a Captain Birdseye lookalike and our couple are left alone on the craggy island (not that one), to stay in its lone cottage. There are shots of the bleak-looking landscape mixed in with some moments of breakdown before things get interesting with the arrival of Jack. Bell's portrayal is quite disturbing and things quickly turn violent. We dare you not to be creeped out by his delivery of the last line: “Is it me you're afraid of?”
With a careful watch, a plot can be pieced together that seems something along the lines of Dead Calm but with an island setting instead of a boat. Is this a case of a trailer giving away too much? Or is there another twist in the tale? Retreat does not yet have release dates. Collider had it first.
Zoe Saldana is the focus of our next trailer, for Colombiana. After witnessing her parents' murder at the age of nine, Cataleya Restrepo has grown into a brutal assassin. This girl will never forget where she came from as she goes on a explosion-filled killing spree.
The young Cataleya is played by Amandla Stenberg who has recently been cast in The Hunger Games adaptation as Rue. Colombiana also stars Callum Blue, Cliff Curtis, Michael Vartan and Jordi Mollà. It's directed by the awesomely-named Olivier Megaton, helmer of the sadly less-than-awesome Transporter 3. You can catch the movie in US cinemas September 2. Tickling your funny bones next are Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as they pair up for a trip through the English countryside tasting scrumptious gourmet food along the way. But how best to fill the time sitting side by side in the air-conditioned car, or opposite one another in a fancy restaurant? Bickering and impressions, of course!
The Trip reunites director Michael Winterbottom with the ad-lib friendly stars of A Cock and Bull Story. As in (one strand of) that film, Coogan and Brydon are playing versions of themselves, riffing on their perceived public personae. Coogan is the womanising, self-regarding and somewhat pompous arse; Brydon is eager-to-please and aware of their slight difference in fame and fortune. Their slightly snide brand of one-upmanship is characterised by a desire to get the last line and elicit the longest laugh.
The film features the voices of Anthony Hopkins, Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino and Ronnie Corbett – although not quite in the traditional manner. The film will be in US cinemas June 10. The trailer comes from Apple.
