The Killers

There’s plenty to look forward to at this time of year: the end of our Narnian winter, the approach of the Bank Holiday season, and the upcoming election which will see the country plastered with outsized pictures of overfed prime ministerial candidates. But in the meantime, IndieMoviesOnline has a genuine treat in store: an exclusive film premiere. From later today, you’ll be able to watch Carlo Ortu’s brilliant hit man comedy The Killers right here, absolutely free.

Should hit men get a per diem? Who pays for parking tickets during surveillance? Can assassins take a lunch break? These are some of the questions the inept hit men struggle with in this off-kilter character comedy. When hapless, easygoing Mike is hired as a hit man, he asks his old friend, ex-soldier Sean, to assist him. Sean has the military discipline and black ops past needed to carry out the crime and the pair set up surveillance while planning the kill. But as the two men monitor their target and move towards a bloody, funny (and bloody funny) climax, it becomes apparent that Sean may be more of a liability than an asset.

Still from The Killers.

Inspired by both the Ealing comedies and classic American film noir of the ‘50s, The Killers has a distinctive directorial style – shot with long takes in uncompromising monochrome – that will have you swiftly engrossed, as well as great performances by Ian Attfield and Matthew Jure.

The Killers still.

The Killers is our fourth exclusive premiere (you can still watch Pat Higgins’ The Devil’s Music and Louis Melville’s Man Who Sold The World) and it’ll go live on Thursday, March 25.

Here’s the trailer, which gives you a hint of the filmic goodness to come.

Director Carlo Ortu graduated from Bournemouth University with a First Class Honours degree in Media Production. Since then, Carlo has written and directed a number of shorts and one feature film.

His last short film, Safe Zone, was selected for a special screening at the Palais at the 2008 Cannes International Film Festival, was one of the Top 20 Highly Commended films in the 2007 TCM Classic Shorts Competition, was nominated for the UK Film Council Award for Best Film at the 2008 London Short Film Festival, was also nominated for Best Drama at the NPA 2008 Film Awards and won the Audience Award at a 2008 Shortwave Films screening.

The Killers still.

In 2008 Shootingpeople.org organised a retrospective of Carlo's work and four of his shorts were shown at the British Film Institute Studio on London's South Bank. Also that year he wrote and directed his first feature The Killers which was described by gifted Brit actor Noel Clarke as "a fantastic film made for no money that blends incredibly witty dialogue with incredible heart".

In 2009 Carlo was accepted onto the prestigious Think-Shoot-Distribute scheme and is now developing a number of film projects.

We’ll have a Q&A with Carlo Ortu in the next few days. Don’t miss it!
