A low-budget independent production, One Day Like Rain melds elements of teen drama, doomsday science fiction and Californian mysticism into a cryptic, David Lynch-influenced tale. An enigmatic affair, very much of it left wide-open to further audience interpretation, One Day Like Rain is an acknowledge attempt by writer-director Paul Todisco to do something very different from the mainstream. His argument is that if micro-budget filmmaking is to attract attention then it needs to offer a separate, alternative viewing experience to that which can be gleaned from standard studio offerings.
The story he offers up in service of this aim is about Gina (Samantha Figura) who, in the words of Todisco, “has this intuition. She has just figured out a way to save the world – but we [the audience] don't really know what that means – but to her saving the world means to end human suffering, to end violence and to somehow elevate consciousness so those things are no longer possible.” As Gina works to save Earth from apparently fast-looming doom, sceptical best friend Jennifer (Marina Resa) finds herself sucked into the whole imbroglio. Also featured amongst the primarily youthful cast is Zombieland star Jesse Eisenberg.
